A Tribute to Ronald Reagan
Comments from Local Republicans Regarding the Man, the Statesman, the Legacy - Ronald Reagan

I will always remember where I was when President Reagan passed away. It is like remembering 9-11 and when President Kennedy passed away. It was so awesome to have the prayer and singing "Amazing Grace". I don't think there was a dry eye in the room of 15,000 plus of Delegates to the State Republican Convention 2004. He was such a fantastic President and I am blessed to have lived and experienced the patriotism he brought back to the United States. May God bless his family.

While I cannot quote Ronald Reagan verbatim, the essence of a particular quote goes something like this; “A Nation cannot stand without it’s Military – but it also cannot stand without it’s morality.” Ronald Reagan was a Christian man and an excellent leader and President of our Country. I am encouraged that we again have a President in like manner of the great Ronald Reagan – so we, as a Nation do not crumble from our immorality.

I felt such sadness when I found out that our 40th President had passed away. My dad called my mom and I while we were out shopping and when I relayed the information to my mom, others in the store overheard our conversation and were saddened to hear of it. I had expected his passing, as we had already been informed of failing health in the last few days. Although Alzheimer’s had ravaged his persona and his health had been deteriorating for years, his physical death brought a sense of finality to his life.

Ronald Reagan is the first president that I can remember. I was born in Fall of 1978 and always grew up as a child of the 80s. I remember his speech on a sad Winter evening in 1986 as he comforted a mourning nation; I remember seeing Nancy Reagan on television and in Good Housekeeping and listening as my grandmother raved about her wardrobe or her stately manner.

As a communication major in college, Ronald Reagan always made for an excellent case study. The Great Communicator used his words and incredibly delivery to become a friend to the American people. He could be gentle and compassionate, as we saw during the Challenger disaster; he could be witty and charming, as was demonstrated with his famous response to the age issue in the 1984 election when he said, "I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience." However, the same man could boldly call an evil empire just that and urge Mr. Gorbachev to "tear down this wall."

Ronald Reagan served as President of the United States eight of the first ten years of my life. He brought a renewed commons sense to American and an optimism that helped to make my childhood idyllic. Because he was the first president I ever knew, I will probably always hold President Ronald Reagan up as the model for what a president should be; for this I am very thankful.
